I have had quite an interest in herbs as of late. Well, actually I've been interested in them for quite a while, but it takes me a couple of years to really get into something. I'll read here and there about it, buy a few books on the subject, try out a few things, and then suddenly I want to learn more and more and more. That's where I'm at with herbs right now, and it is so fascinating! In the near future, and starting today, I want to share what I'm learning, and how we are using herbs in our home. I think you'll find something you may want to try with your family as well.
Below is a simple recipe for homemade toothpaste. A very refreshing, non-chemical, healthy and frugal toothpaste that is!
I first bought some organic mint leaves at the grocery store. I took off the leaves from the larger stems.
I proceeded to tear them up into smaller pieces. I dehydrated them, but you could also put them in your oven on a very low setting for a while.
They tended to "blow around" in the dehydrator from the air flow, so I set another mesh sheet on top of the one with the mint on it to help keep them in place.
This is a picture of the dried leaves. It really doesn't take long for the moisture to leave them.
I grabbed an old baby food jar, and put in some baking soda, and crushed the leaves up a bit with my fingers as I threw some in the jar. Done! Homemade toothpaste...easy, peasy! We've got two ingredients in there, how many does your toothpaste have? Mine had more than I liked, and this is a better option for me.
The idea came from this DVD I have enjoyed and learned so much from. It is available from bulkherbstore.com, and there is also a volume 2 out now as well, which I have not yet seen.
Have a "refreshing" day,
Joy

I also make my own toothpaste using baking soda, glycerine, water, a pinch of salt, and peppermint essential oil. The only problem I've found is that I occasionally deal with sensitive teeth. I find I have to switch back to something else for a while til it goes away.
